Dog Food
PETALUMA, California (AP) - Gus the dog has three legs, one
eye and no hair, except for a white tuft on the top of his
head. He’s a real winner.
The “dog days” of summer can be dangerous for dogs -
especially those dogs left inside hot cars. Every year,
countless dogs die after being locked in cars while their
guardians work, visit, shop, or run other errands. These
tragic deaths are entirely preventable.
Through this website, you’ll learn about what you can do to
protect dogs from the dangers of hot cars. You can find out
how quickly cars heat up in warm weather, whether it’s too
hot to take your dog along today, and how to get the word
out that it’s just not cool to leave a dog in a hot car,
even for “just a minute.”
More households include dogs than children. And so the
editors of The Bark, a magazine that began as a newsletter
advocating a legal off-leash area for dogs to play, had no
trouble finding enough writers and material for a book of
essays, short stories and commentaries on all aspects of
humans and their dogs.
Pet stores are occasionally sued by customers or fined for
selling unhealthy dogs. For example, a few years back Pet
Depot agreed to pay New Jersey $7,500 in penalties and costs
for selling dogs it knew were unfit for sale (among other
violations).
Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog
through an obstacle course in a race for both time and
accuracy. Dogs generally run off-leash with no food or toys
as incentives. The handler can touch neither dog nor
obstacles, except accidentally. Consequently, the handler’s
controls are limited to voice, movement, and various body
signals, requiring exceptional training of the animal.
“A hot oven or a hot car it’s the same thing.” A visit to
this website prompted student Simon Majarian to create this
poster for his class project. Now you can download it for
free, to print out and hang up to remind others not to leave
their dogs in parked cars.
Courses are complicated enough that a dog could not complete
them correctly without human direction. In competition, the
handler must assess the course, decide on handling
strategies, and direct the dog through the course, with
precision and speed equally important. Many strategies exist
to compensate for the inherent difference in human and dog
speeds and the strengths and weaknesses of the various dogs
and handlers.
OK - there’s no such thing as “The Nazis,” either. Some
Nazis shot Jews in the head with apparent unconcern, others
felt quite anxious and guilty doing it, and still others
managed to get themselves confined to clerical work. You
can’t generalize about the Nazis, because each one was an
individual who acted and felt differently.
In Rochester New York, hot dogs are known as “hots” and come
in either red or white. Most hots are found on another
Rochester classic, the garbage plate?an amalgam of hots (or
burgers, sausage, whatever you please), potato salad, home
fries, meat sauce, among others. White hots are normally
made of a mixture of uncured pork, veal, and beef, while red
hots can be made with pork, beef, or both. Zweigle’s is best
known in Rochester as the first to introduce the white hots
in 1925 and makes both natural casing and skinless
varieties.
